Matthew Newkirk is an artist and academic based in Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia.

His work speaks to the power of the visual image in contemporary society and its ability to mediate our perceptions of news, commerce and social relations.
Newkirk's creative practice utilises the same mediums and signifiers that deliver messages to us on a daily basis and investigates how mainstream media disrupts and distorts information.
His research contributes to a new understanding of how power structures utilise new technologies and contemporary mediums in order to sustain their influence.
